    Introduction

Generative design and the different integrated design and analysis tools oriented to architectural design offer a wide range of options for its application.

Facade design, in particular, presents us with the opportunity to articulate climatic, engineering, material, and aesthetic aspects into one of the determining elements in the habitability and the urban integration of the architectural object into the design.

In this short 2-hour workshop, we will focus on processes that allow us, through integrated generative design and analysis tools, to carry out a contextual reading and determine specific geometric and material conditions for a facade.

This workshop will explore the articulated use of tools such as climatic analysis, modular replication, and transformation, and we will review some design control processes considering future phases of design, construction, and assembly.

    Program:

    • Intro + Presentation
    • Session 1: Generalities of facade design, control processes, and relationship with the context.
    • Session 2: Context reading + concept and application example
    • Session 3: Integration of tools, processes, design, and control methodologies. Application example
    • Q&A and Open Discussion

    Software:

    • Rhinoceros 3D
    • Grasshopper

    Plugins:

    • Human
    • Pufferfish
    • LunchBox
    • Ladybug
    • Elefront
    • Galapagos

    Important Notes:

    • The “Generative Algorithms for Facade Design” Free Studio workshop by PAACADEMY will start on Monday, 30th December, at 14:00 (GMT).
    • Total sessions: one session
    • The teaching duration per session will be 2 hours.
    • Students will have time for a break between teaching hours.
    • Each session and the entire studio will be recorded, and videos will be available for participants just a day after the class for unlimited time.
    • Software Installation is NOT a part of the workshop. Participants must have all the software installed before starting the workshop.
    • PAACADEMY will provide a certificate of attendance.

    Instructors:

    Roberto Argüelles

Roberto Argüelles‘s experience comprises methodologies and techniques associated with generative design and digital fabrication for urban, architectural, and industrial design, as well as media arts. His work consists of research, teaching, and project collaborations in México, Spain, the USA, India, and the Philippines with firms like DUNN lightweight Architecture, GG Architects, NUDES in the Classroom, and The Bittertang Farm.

He founded XenoLab in 2019 to further his research and works, focusing on the morphogenetic potential of the digital technologies applied in design, fabrication, and analysis in order to search for new means and alternatives to achieve complexity.

In 2021 he becomes part of the organizing team for Digital Futures in Spanish, commited for the open and free education in the arts, architecture and design around the world, specially in the Spanish-Speaker sphere. In 2022 he joined Kinetica Group llc. Computational design team, developing solutions for digital fabrication and production through the creation of generative algorithms for optimization and automation processes.

In 2024, he joined the academic and research team for the degree in architecture at the Tonalá University Center of the University of Guadalajara (U de G), as well as the Monterrey Institute of Technology and Higher Education (ITESM), where he teaches architectural design and digital technologies for design and manufacturing.
