Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates — The long-anticipated Zayed National Museum, the official national museum of the UAE, will open to the public on December 3, 2025. Marking a major milestone in Abu Dhabi’s ongoing transformation into a global center for culture and design.

Located in the Saadiyat Cultural District, one of the most significant concentrations of cultural institutions worldwide, the Zayed National Museum will join the Louvre Abu Dhabi and the future Guggenheim Abu Dhabi, strengthening the emirate’s vision of becoming a hub for art, heritage, and sustainable innovation.

Architectural Vision by Foster + Partners

Designed by Norman Foster of Foster + Partners, the museum’s structure is a masterclass in cultural symbolism and environmental engineering. The building’s most distinctive feature—a series of five soaring steel “wing” towers—draws inspiration from the falcon’s wings, referencing Sheikh Zayed’s lifelong passion for falconry and the UAE’s natural heritage.

Each tower functions as a thermal chimney, naturally ventilating the building by pulling cool air through the museum’s internal spaces, an innovation that combines passive cooling with modern sustainability systems. This design ensures energy efficiency in line with Abu Dhabi’s environmental agenda and the UAE’s 2050 Net Zero strategy.

Inside, the museum follows a layered, mounting layout, symbolizing the country’s progression from its ancient roots to its modern identity. Natural stone, lightweight steel, and glass come together to create a structure that feels both monumental and fluid, an architectural dialogue between desert landscape and contemporary design.

    Celebrating Sheikh Zayed’s Legacy

At its conceptual core, the Zayed National Museum celebrates the life, vision, and values of Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the Founding Father of the UAE. His philosophy on education, cultural preservation, and respect for the environment resonates throughout the museum’s narrative and physical form.

According to H.E. Mohamed Khalifa Al Mubarak, Chairman of the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi, “The Zayed National Museum presents the story of our land, our people, and our heritage in a way that is alive, evolving, and open to all. It embodies Sheikh Zayed’s belief in culture and knowledge as guiding values for the nation’s progress.”

Immersive and Technological Experience at Zayed National Museum

The Zayed National Museum will offer an immersive and technology-driven visitor experience, combining archaeological artifacts, archival materials, and contemporary installations within an architecturally dynamic setting. Each gallery is designed to guide visitors through a chronological and sensory journey from the earliest human settlements in the region to the UAE’s rapid transformation into a modern nation.

Interactive exhibits, audiovisual storytelling, and spatially responsive displays will enable visitors to engage directly with the nation’s history and cultural identity. The museum’s architectural layout enhances this experience, using natural light, layered spaces, and soundscapes to create a seamless flow between historical narrative and physical environment.

This integration of design, technology, and storytelling positions the Zayed National Museum as a benchmark for contemporary museum architecture in the Middle East.

Part of Saadiyat’s Expanding Cultural Ecosystem

The Saadiyat Cultural District represents one of the world’s cultural developments, designed to host institutions that encourage dialogue between civilizations. Alongside the Zayed National Museum, the district includes Louvre Abu Dhabi, Guggenheim Abu Dhabi, and the Abrahamic Family House, creating a comprehensive landscape of art, architecture, and learning.

The museum’s opening will further Abu Dhabi’s strategy of positioning culture for education, tourism, and sustainable development.

The Zayed National Museum will officially open on December 3, 2025, coinciding with the UAE’s 54th National Day. With its falcon-inspired towers, sustainable design, and mission to preserve Emirati identity, the Zayed National Museum stands as a landmark of architecture and national storytelling, bridging the UAE’s heritage with its global cultural initiatives.
