Foster + Partners has completed Jia Art Gallery, a new cultural destination at the center of the Changfeng mixed-use development in Shanghai’s Putuo District. Designed as a civic landmark and community destination, the project blends art, public life, and architecture into a sculptural building inspired by the blooming flowers of nearby Changfeng Park. Positioned at the intersection of the development’s main urban axes, the gallery acts as the social and cultural heart of the wider “Live-Work-Play” masterplan.

A Cultural Anchor for Changfeng District

Jia Art forms a key part of Foster + Partners’ larger vision for the Changfeng development, which combines offices, retail, housing, public amenities, and green spaces into an integrated urban district.

The 5,000-square-meter gallery provides flexible exhibition halls, educational facilities, event areas, hospitality spaces, and lecture rooms, creating a central gathering place for the local community.

Split into two interconnected buildings linked by a dramatic double-height atrium, the gallery supports both contemporary and traditional art programs while encouraging public interaction and cultural exchange.

    Architecture Inspired by Blossoming Flowers

The gallery’s curving form draws inspiration from spring-blooming flowers found in the surrounding park landscape. Four petal-like structures rise from the base of the building and unfold outward to shape the roof, giving the project a soft and organic architectural identity. A central glass skylight brings daylight deep into the atrium and exhibition spaces, reinforcing the connection between light, movement, and form.

According to Norman Foster, the project highlights the importance of embedding culture and public art into the urban fabric to strengthen community identity and civic life.

A Dynamic Façade and Human-Centered Design

The building’s façade combines vertical tubular glass ribs with mirror-finished stainless steel panels that reflect daylight and create a glowing presence after dark. Ultra-High Performance Concrete panels on the western side improve privacy while maintaining the gallery’s sculptural appearance. Inside, curved surfaces and a calm, natural palette continue the floral design language, creating a seamless relationship between exterior and interior architecture.

Scaled to feel welcoming and accessible, Jia Art introduces a softer civic experience within Shanghai’s fast-paced urban environment while connecting to the district’s expanding green river corridor.
