    Introduction to 3D-Printing Ceramics 2.0:

To bridge the gap between the realms of digital and physical, 3D printing with clay has gained immense popularity over the last few years. The process adds another layer of intrigue to fabrication, where material and print paths must be finely tuned to achieve spectacular results. It is a compelling and exciting creation method, with techniques applicable from object to architectural scales.

The Scope of 3D-Printing Ceramics 2.0 Workshop:

In 3D-Printing Ceramics 2.0 workshop, we will explore clay 3D printing, with an introduction to the material and fabrication process, setting up files to print with cura, and finely choreographing printing paths with Grasshopper to gain complete control over the printer, learning techniques such as non-planar printing, variable extrusion, and custom-print paths. Alongside practical lessons, we will explore different clay 3D printer specifications and ways of post-processing pieces after they have been printed to capitalize on the infinite possibilities of clay and ceramics.

    Methodology of 3D-Printing Ceramics 2.0:

To gain skills for 3D printing with clay, you will not be required to have a clay 3D printer, but you will follow along with a series of 10 exercises that will gradually build up your knowledge from setting up a print in cura, creating G-code in Grasshopper, and customizing print-paths to develop completely bespoke pieces. After each exercise, we will print a student’s work to assess how the digital file translates into clay. These prints will be live-streamed from a separate camera to see how they build up layer by layer. Thus, we will learn from failures and find exciting new languages for design.

    Objectives:

Throughout the workshop, you will learn the basic principles of clay 3D printing, understand how the machine operates, and have a preliminary understanding of the material. You will learn how to set up a digital file in Cura for clay 3D printing for basic objects and how code works. By the end of the two days, you will know how to create G-code from within Grasshopper and explore how to finely tune and choreograph print paths for ultimate control of the machine and material. Finally, once the course has finished, you will have access to the presentation and all of the exercises to build your own scripts and experiment with the techniques.

    3D-Printing Ceramics 2.0

Josef Stöger is an Artist and Designer with a master’s degree in Architecture from the Bartlett School of Architecture, London. He is inspired by the systems and processes that form some of the most beautiful structures in nature and how these can be used in our built environment to create designs that integrate seamlessly with the complexity of our globe’s ecology. He has a varied background in VR development, film-making, fabrication, and digital design. With four years of experience working as a technical tutor for Bartlett students, his most recent collaboration is with Peugeot, 3D printing a ceramic sculpture to celebrate the launch of their new car. With over five years of experience in clay 3D printing, he now creates high-value art/architectural pieces from digitally formed ceramics.
