After years of speculation and persistent requests from enthusiasts, Ferrari has finally answered one of the automotive world’s biggest wishes, but with a distinctly modern twist. The Italian marque has unveiled the Ferrari 12Cilindri Manuale, a limited-production grand tourer that revives the iconic gated gear lever and three-pedal driving experience without returning to a conventional manual gearbox.

Instead of engineering an entirely new mechanical transmission, Ferrari has developed an innovative ‘Manuale by Wire’ system that recreates the engagement, sound, and feel of shifting a traditional manual while retaining the speed and performance of its eight-speed dual-clutch transmission. The result is a car that bridges celebrated heritage with modern engineering, delivering nostalgia without compromising performance.

    Bringing Back Manual Driving

    Ferrari 12Cilindri Manuale

For nearly two decades, Ferrari enthusiasts have hoped for the return of a manual transmission. The company’s last production V12 manual, the 599 GTB Fiorano, ended production in 2012, marking the end of an era as paddle-shift gearboxes became the industry standard.

    Ferrari 12Cilindri Manuale

The new Ferrari 12Cilindri Manuale doesn’t simply recreate that gearbox. Instead, it introduces Ferrari’s newly developed Manuale by Wire technology, a fully electronic system that convincingly simulates the mechanical interaction of a traditional manual transmission.

    Ferrari 12Cilindri Manuale

The gearbox itself remains a proven eight-speed dual-clutch transmission. Still, electronic actuators, sensors, software calibration, and a physical clutch pedal work together to reproduce the tactile sensation of operating a genuine gated manual. Ferrari believes this approach offers the emotional connection of classic driving while preserving the precision, durability, and speed expected from a modern supercar.

How the ‘Manuale by Wire’ System Works

Technology has been engineered specifically to recreate the complete manual driving experience.

    Ferrari 12Cilindri Manuale

    Key features include:

    • A beautifully crafted open-gated aluminum gear selector
    • A fully functional clutch pedal
    • Six manually selectable gears arranged in a classic H-pattern
    • Simulated clutch engagement and disengagement
    • Realistic resistance while shifting
    • Authentic metallic “click-clack” sound associated with classic Ferrari gated shifters
    • The ability to stall the engine under certain driving conditions for added realism

When the driver presses the clutch below approximately 100 km/h (62 mph), the car enters Manuale mode. Drivers then shift through six gears using the traditional H-pattern, while Ferrari’s software controls the dual-clutch transmission behind the scenes.

The final two gears remain reserved for automatic high-speed cruising, ensuring long-distance refinement without sacrificing the immersive driving experience. Paddle shifters have been eliminated entirely, emphasizing Ferrari’s commitment to recreating an authentic manual environment.

Naturally Aspirated V12 Remains the Star

    Ferrari 12Cilindri Manuale

The Ferrari 12Cilindri Manuale continues to use the 6.5-litre naturally aspirated V12, producing:

    • Engine: 6.5-litre naturally aspirated V12
    • Power: 830 hp (819 hp in some market ratings)
    • Torque: 678 Nm
    • Transmission: Eight-speed dual-clutch with Manuale by Wire interface
    • Drive: Rear-wheel drive

The high-revving engine continues to deliver its signature soundtrack while preserving Ferrari’s commitment to naturally aspirated performance in an increasingly electrified automotive landscape.

Inspired by Ferrari’s Greatest Driver Cars

    Ferrari 12Cilindri Manuale

Engineers reportedly benchmarked the shifting feel against the legendary Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano, the company’s final V12 manual production model.

Development focused on emotional engagement, perfecting clutch weight, shift resistance, gear engagement feel, and throttle response to recreate the mechanical satisfaction enthusiasts remember.

    Ferrari 12Cilindri Manuale

Even details such as the audible metallic click of the gated shifter were carefully engineered to evoke Ferrari’s classic manual sports cars.

    Limited Production

Exclusivity remains central to the project.

Ferrari will produce only 1,499 examples of the 12Cilindri Manuale, making it one of the marque’s most desirable limited-production grand tourers.

    Ferrari 12Cilindri Manuale

Pricing begins at approximately €590,000 (around US$675,000) before personalization options. As with many Ferrari special editions, allocation is expected to prioritize long-standing clients and collectors.

Exterior Design Remains Faithful to the 12Cilindri

Visually, the Manuale closely follows the design language introduced by the standard Ferrari 12Cilindri.

The long bonnet, clean proportions, muscular rear haunches, and retro-inspired black front fascia continue to reference the legendary 365 GTB/4 Daytona, while subtle Manuale badging distinguishes the limited edition.

    Ferrari 12Cilindri Manuale

Inside, however, the driving environment changes dramatically with the introduction of the iconic gated gear lever occupying the center console, a feature absent from the brand’s road cars for nearly two decades.

    Ferrari 12Cilindri Manuale

The arrival of the Ferrari 12Cilindri Manuale represents that emotional driver engagement remains just as valuable as outright performance. The Manuale by Wire system delivers much of the tactile satisfaction enthusiasts crave while maintaining the speed, efficiency, and reliability of a modern dual-clutch drivetrain.

    Ferrari 12Cilindri Manuale

In an era increasingly shaped by electrification and automation, the latest limited edition demonstrates that innovation can also preserve tradition. For collectors and driving enthusiasts alike, the 12Cilindri Manuale offers a rare combination of heritage, technology, and naturally aspirated V12 performance, ensuring that the joy of shifting gears remains part of the future.
