Designed by Zaha Hadid Architects, Taikang Financial Center integrates offices, apartments, hotels, shopping, and catering facilities, as well as cultural and entertainment facilities, and can accommodate more than 20,000 people per day; it can be described as a comprehensive vertical community directly connected to the city’s new central park and riverside wetlands.
Considering Wuhan’s important position as the central hub of China’s transportation network, the design of Taikang Financial Center adopts a circular plan, consisting of three interconnected towers in the urban master plan of Hankou Riverside Business District. The Yangtze River Park and wetland in the east of the site and the city’s new central park in the south are integrated. These new natural public areas are an integral part of Wuhan’s sponge city plan, which can store and filter stormwater in a natural way, slow down stormwater discharge, prevent flooding, and promote water reuse.
Building 1 (52 floors) faces the city; Building 2 (47 floors) faces the river; and Building 3 (50 floors) faces the park. Shops and restaurants on the ground and lobby levels are organized around a garden courtyard that extends vertically to form an urban canyon between the three towers. More public spaces and service facilities are located on the bridge connecting the high-rise towers, including roof gardens and terraces, which provide people with a panoramic view of the city and the Yangtze River.
Aiming at the LEED Gold certification of the US Green Building Council, the three circular towers of Taikang Financial Center all adopt an all-weather self-shading system. Exterior fins with tapered profiles extend from each glass mullion, maintaining unobstructed interior views of the city while providing additional sun shading to the building’s façade. The building’s high-performance envelope ensures natural daylight on each floor while reducing the central energy demand for heating and cooling. The MEP system also reduces carbon emissions and energy consumption by employing intelligent monitoring and control systems including high-efficiency pumps, fans, boilers and coolers, and exhaust heat recovery. In addition, through the use of low-flow water-saving devices and the combination of planting local drought-resistant vegetation species, the total water consumption of the project has also been reduced. At the same time, the development of the stormwater management system in this project also caters to the development needs of the local sponge city plan.
