    Introduction to Advanced Grasshopper 2.0:

Current design and architecture practice is highly adopted to use parametric modeling tools and procedural workflows. Such methods help designers to explore a wide range of outcomes for a defined design question. Conventionally, 3D software were limited to certain geometrical modifiers that could be used, but algorithmic modeling tools such as Grasshopper offer the possibility to develop custom modifiers in your design workflow. This workshop will comprehensively explore the Grasshopper environment and how this tool can be used for advanced 3d modeling procedures.

    The Scope of the Workshop:

This workshop will comprehensively explore several modeling methods in Grasshopper. First, we will go through the data structure in Grasshopper as it is the fundamental need for our next steps. Then, we will explore the use of mathematical operations and equations in Grasshopper. At this stage, we will practice modeling foldable surfaces and structures as they are well-related to mathematic operations. Physics and force simulation is the next part of this workshop, in which examples of tensile and minimal surfaces will be provided. Mesh-based modeling plugins and strategies will be covered to design complex geometries and morphing surface patterns. The other part of our workshop will focus in-depth on the voxel-based model and its integration. Students will work individually on their projects.

    Program:

    Day 1:

    • Introduction to Grasshopper and parametric modeling of data structures in Grasshopper
    • Mathematical operations in Grasshopper
    • Using equations to create shapes
    • Exercise: Designing a foldable structure
    • Physics and force simulation
    • Introduction to Kangaroo Physics
    • Creating tensile structures
    • Mesh-based modeling strategies
    • Exploring mesh manipulation tools
    • Exercise: Designing a morphing surface pattern

    Day 2:

    Advanced mesh techniques

    • Working with mesh subdivision
    • Creating complex geometries

    voxel-based modeling

    • Understanding voxels and their applications
    • voxel operations in Grasshopper

Integrating voxel techniques with other methods

    • Combining voxels with NURBS and mesh objects
    • Exercise: Creating a hybrid model

    Voxel-based form generation

    • Using mathematical functions to create voxel forms.
    • Applying noise and randomness to voxel structures.

    Instructor:

    Amir Hossein

Amir Hossein is a Ph.D. student in Architecture at Pennsylvania State University, specializing in Design Computing. His research focuses on computational design methods and digital fabrication, particularly in the area of additive manufacturing of concrete structures. This work aims to enhance automation in construction and promote sustainable architectural practices, reflecting his commitment to innovation in the field.

Before pursuing his doctoral studies at Penn State, Amir gained six years of experience as an architectural and computational designer in Iran. During this time, he worked on various projects involving design optimization, complex 3D modeling, and computational workflows. This professional background has provided him with a strong understanding of how parametric design tools like Grasshopper can be effectively applied in real-world architectural practices.

In addition to his research and practical experience, Amir has been teaching computational design software, including Grasshopper and its ecosystem of plugins, for several years. Through workshops and educational initiatives, he aims to share his knowledge and expertise, helping participants unlock the full potential of Grasshopper in their design practices and research projects.
