Epoch, the interactive layered installation designed by David Spriggs, draws its inspiration from its name. Epoch is the point in time that marks the beginning of an era or it is a reference starting point from which time is measured. The immersive artwork gives shape to time and perception.

The intricately layered forms in Epoch all lead to a single vanishing point, similar to how linear perspective provides a sense of depth on flat surfaces. However, David’s work provides a distinct type of viewpoint that operates in three dimensions — a strata-perspective. The layered form system spreads outwards towards the spectator from an empty vanishing point.
These metal forms, which are architectural in nature, represent the layering of time, the idea of the present overlying the past. The intricacy of shapes generates a bigger three-dimensional semi-ellipsoid, resembling the human eye and encompassing the viewer’s field of vision.
The epoch is displayed at The Hyatt Centric Victoria Harbour, Hong Kong’s top-story glass atrium.

About the artist:
David Spriggs is a Vancouver-based artist who works in a realm between two and three dimensions. He investigates issues such as space, time, movement, color, visual systems and surveillance, power techniques and symbols, and form and perception thresholds to create spectacular, large-scale installations. His work has been demonstrated in various galleries and museums around the world, including the Musée de La Poste in Paris, the Powerlong Museum in Shanghai, Messums Wiltshire in the United Kingdom, Arsenal in Montreal, the Prague Biennial 5, the Louis Vuitton Gallery in Macau, and the Sharjah Art Museum in the United Arab Emirates.
