The new residential tower by Henning Larsen in Taipei is built around a simple but strong idea. How does light shape the way people live? Designing With Daylight Inside Taipei’s New Residential Tower
Northern Lights, a residential tower located in the dense core of Taipei, responds directly to the city’s subtropical climate. The building is carefully oriented so that all 46 residences face south toward the park, allowing consistent daylight and open views of greenery, something rare in compact urban environments.
Full-length balconies play a key role in the design. They are both outdoor extensions and practical shading devices. By reducing direct solar heat gain, they help limit the need for heavy air conditioning. The angled soffits further refine this strategy. They block the harsh midday sun while allowing softer morning and evening light to enter. This balance ensures interiors remain bright without becoming overheated. This idea is translated into the façade through geometry and material choice. The angled balcony walls create moving shadows throughout the day, giving the building a dynamic surface that changes with sunlight. The project is being developed by Continental Development Corporation.
Materials are selected for both performance and appearance. Pale natural stone provides thermal stability and durability, helping regulate internal temperatures. Champagne-toned metal details at the balconies and soffits reflect light subtly, adding warmth without overpowering the overall design. The result is a façade that feels calm yet alive, shaped by natural conditions.
Henning Larsen Brings a Sense of Calm to Urban Living
Inside, the apartments are designed to make the most of available light and views. Large openings frame the park, bringing a sense of openness into relatively compact urban homes. This approach improves visual comfort and the overall living experience, making interiors feel larger and more connected to their surroundings.
At ground level, landscaped gardens extend the presence of Daan Park into the site. These shared spaces create a smooth transition between the public park and private residences. At the top, a rooftop sanctuary offers residents a rare escape within the city. Open sky, greenery, and quiet spaces provide a place to relax without leaving home.
