    HKS Selected to Design New Washington Commanders Stadium

    The Washington Commanders and global design firm HKS have revealed the initial architectural design for the Washington Commanders Stadium, a new world-class NFL venue planned for Washington, D.C. The design introduces a roofed, year-round facility that reflects presence and a fan-centric arrangement.

    HKS Project Vision

    HKS was officially named lead architect for the Washington Commanders Stadium in November 2025, after a competitive design selection process. The firm brings extensive stadium experience, including SoFi Stadium, U.S. Bank Stadium, and AT&T Stadium. This positions the Commanders’ new venue within a lineage of contemporary NFL architecture shaped by performance and spectator experience.

    Team President Mark Clouse described the release of the first conceptual renderings as a defining moment in the project’s evolution, emphasizing collaboration with HKS and alignment with the city’s monumental site context.

    The design of the Washington Commanders Stadium is grounded in the historic L’Enfant Plan of Washington, D.C., strategically aligned along the city’s Monumental Axis. This alignment reinforces visual and spatial connections to major landmarks while respecting the urban fabric. The site occupies the former Robert F. Kennedy Stadium campus and integrates seamlessly into the surrounding waterfront and park system.

    A continuous colonnade encircles the stadium, reinforcing the relationship between the interior and exterior public realm and giving the structure a monumental quality echoing classical architecture. This expression reinforces Washington, D.C.’s architectural heritage while establishing a distinct identity for the new stadium.

    A defining architectural feature is the sculpted, transparent domed roof, which establishes a dynamic profile that rises toward the north and south. This massing approach respects sight lines to the U.S. Capitol and adjacent monuments by maintaining a lower profile along the east–west axis. HKS emphasizes both openness and continuity, using the roof and colonnade to unify the building’s presence across different scales.

    At approximately 70,000+ seats, the stadium will accommodate major sporting events, concerts, and community programming, positioning itself as a year-round destination. The design also dedicates at least 30 percent of the 180-acre campus to active and passive recreation, outdoor plazas, and green spaces.

    Beyond the stadium’s envelope, the design integrates with a larger mixed-use redevelopment plan. The Commanders Stadium anchors housing, retail, hotel, and recreation components intended to revitalize the Anacostia River edge and create a vibrant neighborhood district. The plan includes up to 6,000 residential units, new youth sports facilities, and preserved playing fields, reinforcing the stadium’s role as both a cultural and urban catalyst.

    HKS and the Commanders will continue with schematic design phases and community engagement into early 2026. Construction is planned to begin in spring 2027, with full completion and opening anticipated for the 2030 NFL season.

    The Washington Commanders Stadium’s transparent roof, colonnade, and response to the L’Enfant Plan frame a stadium that is both rooted in Washington’s urban legacy and oriented toward contemporary sports and entertainment architecture. The project reflects HKS’s direction in crafting sports venues that are places of community engagement, cultural identity, and architectural significance.

    This design phase marks a major step in realizing a long-anticipated return of the Commanders to Washington, D.C., and embeds the stadium within a broader vision of urban life.
