KYKLOS is an upcoming cultural centre taking shape in Piraeus, within the historic port of Athens, designed by the renowned Renzo Piano Building Workshop (RPBW) in collaboration with Betaplan Architects and landscape architect Camille Muller. Commissioned by the Dinos and Lia Martinos Foundation, the project is envisioned as a vibrant cultural destination with strong international connections to art institutions around the world. The cultural centre primarily aims to establish an international hub connected to similar art centres abroad, open to the community, students, and visitors, enriching the urban and cultural life of the Athens metropolitan region.

Initiated in 2023 and currently under development, the project is expected to be completed by the final quarter of 2028. Envisioned as a dynamic cultural centre, the building will house contemporary art collections and host an internationally oriented programme of exhibitions and events. Designed as an open and welcoming place for art, learning, and everyday public life, the centre aims to weave into the social and urban fabric of the Athens metropolitan area through both its architecture and strong local engagement.

Designed as an open and welcoming place for people as much as for art and learning. The architecture of KYKLOS is a fluid blend of enclosed galleries and open-air spaces, creating a vibrant space where exhibitions, gardens, and gathering areas come together naturally. Envisioned as a new cultural hub for Piraeus, it is designed to serve its local community while engaging with a broader international arts network. The design emphasizes clarity of space, environmental responsibility, and a strong civic identity, an architecture that feels both thoughtful and humane.

The building is designed as a shelter, set amidst the Mediterranean lush garden landscape. Approximately 62% of the site is planned for public planted spaces designed with Camille Muller, easing the transition between the architecture and the city while contributing to the urban ecosystem. Fully glazed exhibition galleries that face the city’s largest avenues to the west, with the lush garden to the east. Layered architectural elements and vegetation filter daylight, frame views, and create a transparent space with adaptable interiors. The flexible layout and interiors allow exhibitions, events, and educational activities to coexist and evolve.

Design rooted in a commitment to sustainability; the building is shaped by natural daylight and carefully selected energy-efficient materials that reduce environmental impact while enhancing long-term resilience. Alongside permanent and temporary exhibitions, the architecture supports a rich program of talks, film screenings, and digital initiatives, extending its role beyond display to active cultural exchange. Through both in-person and digital experiences, the centre invites audiences to engage with contemporary art and its shifting global stories in meaningful and accessible ways.
