MAD Architects, led by Ma Yansong, unveiled One River North, an eye-catching 16-story mixed-use development in Denver’s River North Art District (RiNo). The building features a stunning canyon-like crack facade, symbolizing the fusion of nature and urban life and creating a unique architectural statement in the heart of the city.
A Building that Blends Architecture and Nature
More than just a residential building, One River North offers a revolutionary approach to city living by incorporating nature into its design. “Imagine living in a building yet feeling as though you’re immersed in a natural landscape—like living within a canyon itself,” said Ma Yansong, MAD’s Principal Architect.
Residents can explore a canyon trail that winds from the 6th to the 9th floors, with plants and water features designed to evoke the natural beauty of Colorado’s canyons and foothills. The sound of cascading water enhances the immersive experience, and can even be heard from the street below.
The design is deeply inspired by Colorado’s natural landscapes, reflecting the surrounding mountains and canyons. “Our goal was to create a living space that feels connected to Denver’s outdoor lifestyle and natural environment,” explained Yansong. “This building is not just a place to live—it’s a place to experience the outdoors, even within the city.”
A Canyon-Inspired Living Experience
The canyon-like crack in the building’s façade is more than just an aesthetic feature—it serves as the heart of the building’s amenity space. The carved-out, four-story canyon area is designed to resemble natural erosion, providing residents with over 13,000 square feet of landscaped terraces that offer stunning views of the city. These terraces, with their hanging gardens and water elements, bring nature into the daily lives of residents and create a sense of community.
“We wanted to create an environment where people could engage with their surroundings and connect with one another,” Yansong noted. The canyon-inspired design promotes wellness by encouraging exploration and interaction with nature. The landscape design, inspired by Colorado’s diverse biomes, features plant species that will flourish over time, transforming the canyon area into a thriving green space.
Atop the building, a landscaped rooftop terrace provides unobstructed views of the Rocky Mountains and Denver skyline. Complete with a pool, spa, and garden, this alpine-inspired space offers residents a serene retreat in the heart of the city.
In addition to its design, One River North has earned Fitwel certification, reflecting its commitment to promoting the physical and mental well-being of its residents. The certification highlights the building’s focus on health and wellness, as well as its innovative approach to mixed-use development.
As an addition to Denver’s RiNo District, One River North is redefining what it means to live in an urban environment. “We believe that the future of city living is about creating spaces that connect people with nature and each other,” said Yansong.
