    Parking Deck 2

Parking Deck 2 is a structure, that meets the need of a growing region and the demand for purpose of education and training services at the southern edge of Wake Tech Community College, Raleigh, NC. Designed by the architect Shann Rushing of Clark Nexen architecture firm, the renewal project with 776-space decks was completed in 2015.

The location of the project is positioned in the east/west direction to take full use of northern and southern sun exposure, as well as vistas to the wetland that the concern for the environment and the surrounding natural scenery is reflected in the design of the new parking deck.

Pedestrian access to the academic buildings comes via a common courtyard between decks and over a pedestrian bridge across the wetland. Parking Deck 2 is clad in bespoke corrugated stainless steel panels that move and slide to give natural ventilation and dappled sunlight inspired by the shadows of the surrounding natural woods. The paneled enclosure provides vast views of the woods from its northern opening. The panels were arranged using parametric techniques to achieve a balance between the sensation of enclosure, texture, code-required fire access, and code-required ventilation. In addition to computational techniques, CNC holes in ACM panels were employed to make super-graphic numerals that are very durable. Throughout the development, Clark Nexsen employed mockups to assist product design possibilities based on the scripts.

At the conclusion of construction documentation, the entire budget was decreased by about 10 percent due to an increase in construction expenses. Clark Nexsen, in partnership with the metal pan-el supplier, changed the parametric script to investigate cost-effective techniques for lowering the amount of metal panel cladding while minimizing the influence on the building’s aesthetics and overall idea. Due to the facade’s parametric design, the redesign was completed in record time and to the precise panel count stipulated by the contractor.
