The Beijing Art Museum is an upcoming cultural landmark, set to emerge as a major cultural destination in China’s capital, designed by Snøhetta in collaboration with the Beijing Institute of Architectural Design (BIAD). Located in Tongzhou District, above an active metro line, the project began construction on December 31, 2025, and is expected to open in 2029. Once complete, the museum will become Snøhetta’s second significant cultural institution in Beijing, reinforcing its growing presence in the city’s cultural landscape.
Spanning more than 110,000 square meters, the new museum is envisioned as a dynamic platform for art in all its forms, from fine art and intangible cultural heritage to fashion and contemporary practices. Blending historical narratives with modern expression, it is set to become a vibrant cultural hub for Beijing and also a welcoming civic space for the local community. With sustainability embedded in the design, the architecture integrates photovoltaic panels and climate-responsive landscapes.
Design Concept
The design concept is rooted in the idea of “vision”; the design reimagines the museum as both a place of preservation and a platform for revelation, where viewing becomes an aesthetic experience. The architecture features a series of rectangular gallery volumes radiating from a luminous central atrium, connected by a sculptural curved staircase that anchors the building.
At the heart, a kaleidoscopic circular atrium with programs inward, offering layered spaces for exhibitions and social exchange through connections. Rippled façades like a lens soften the boundary between architecture and landscape. Petal-shaped extensions frame panoramic views, allowing visitors to look outward as much as they are seen. The landscape design continues this radiating language, unfolding into generous civic spaces that invite art, conversation, and community life beyond the museum walls.
‘Its sculptural massing radiates outwards from a central core, while lens-like, rippled facades dissolve boundaries between building and landscape, establishing a dynamic public realm that engages the local community,’ said Snohetta. Once completed, the Beijing Art Museum will become the architecture studio’s second landmark cultural project in the city, following the debut of the Beijing City Library in 2023. The studio, through the upcoming museum, reinforces and shapes the contemporary dialogue between architecture, art, and public life in Beijing.
