Snohetta, in collaboration with A49 Architects, unveils its most ambitious urban regeneration project in Asia for Magnolia Quality Development Corporation (MQDC). Situated within South Sukhumvit, one of Bangkok’s most vibrant cultural and innovation districts. Cloud 11 is a mixed-use urban complex characterized by a central courtyard that serves as an ecological infrastructure and cultural park. The project weaves nature, culture, and innovation into a seamless urban experience that invites people to gather, unwind, and interact.
Bangkok faces significant urban challenges, including rising heat, air pollution, recurrent flooding, and the lowest green space ratio in Asia (less than 7 square meters of area). In response to the urban challenges, Snohetta’s design solution is a sustainable, landscape-focused approach with a raised landscape that prioritizes openness, accessibility, and community. The design focuses on landscape to create an urban oasis that champions environmental resilience and community wellbeing.
The urban complex, covering an area of 250,000 square meters, primarily aims to bring together creative companies and entrepreneurs within the capital. The architecture is a characteristic complex, a large glazed volume raised above a central courtyard, which is open to the public with one of Thailand’s largest elevated landscapes. The design integrates a sustainable, landscape-forward approach to offset the environmental impact on the larger urban landscape.
The design comprises a central courtyard, also designed with a green pocket of parks and elevated gardens that help filter air, minimize heat, and support biodiversity within the context. The design presents not only an innovative adaptation designed for Bangkok but also an environmental urban model for other cities in the region. “Cloud 11 represents a transformative vision for sustainable urban regeneration,” said Snøhetta’s managing director Richard Wood.
Sustainability within the Creative Hub
Cloud 11 also integrates sustainability, environmentally and socially, within the entire urban complex. The sustainable elements, including green roofs, shaded facades, and natural ventilation, help reduce energy demand. Stormwater can be responsibly managed through porous pavements, bioswales, rain gardens, and gravel filtration planters through ecologically responsive infrastructure. The complex also integrates seating spaces built from milled timber and recycled plastics, which helps reduce waste while creating low-carbon furniture.
Rooted in its urban context, Cloud 11 draws inspiration from Bangkok’s layered streetscapes, from shophouses to elevated Skytrain lines and the city’s skyline. Designed as a vibrant mixed-use design that blends residential, commercial, and leisure spaces, including creative studios, hotels, market halls, and dining venues. By bringing together artists, innovators, entrepreneurs, and the public, the development creates a dynamic 24-hour landmark where culture, community, and green spaces seamlessly converge.
The design ensures that everyone, from children to parents, elders, and people with disabilities, can move through the space with ease. Universal ramps, outdoor lifts, shaded walkways, and a network of alleys, plazas, and escalators create smooth circulation that connects the streets to the elevated park. Open around the clock, these public landscapes invite people to gather, relax, and engage at any hour, transforming Cloud 11 into a welcoming green haven that strengthens community connection and everyday comfort.
The landscape is thoughtfully crafted to act as a living zone for public well-being, using layered, locally sourced planting that cleans the air and nurtures a cooler, more comfortable microclimate. Dense, shaded corridors reduce the urban heat island effect, resilient plant species improve water absorption during Bangkok’s heavy rains, and strengthen ecological balance. Together, these green systems create a healthier, climate-responsive environment that feels both culturally rooted and deeply restorative.
