The Greater Bay Area Sports Center, designed by Zaha Hadid Architects (ZHA) (in collaboration with the Guangdong Architectural Design & Research Institute), rises on the western bank of the Pearl River in the Nansha District of Guangzhou. Spanning a vast 70 hectares, the complex sits at the heart of a developing civic, business, and residential zone in the Guangdong–Hong Kong–Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA), which aims to accommodate a population of nearly 100 million by 2030.
The sports center is designed as a new public anchor offering world-class facilities while welcoming local communities through its landscaped riverside park, recreation zones, and easy access via metro and bridge connections.
ZHA’s design draws on the region’s maritime past. The sweeping curves and tapered profiles of the buildings recall the hulls of traditional Song-dynasty sailing ships that once sailed the Pearl River, a tribute to the waterborne trade that shaped the region. The center embraces local climatic and architectural traditions. Influenced by the vernacular “Lingnan” style, its layout incorporates generous shaded walkways and open, naturally ventilated spaces, vital for comfort in Guangzhou’s humid subtropical climate.
One of the most striking elements is the stadium’s multi-layered roof. Inspired by the folds of a traditional Chinese silk fan, this roof shields spectators from rain and direct sunlight, while its layered geometry helps hot air rise and escape through a passive ventilation strategy that reduces reliance on mechanical cooling.
Vertical louvres echoing the curvature of the architecture wrap around the buildings, optimizing shading through 3D digital modeling and encouraging airflow, particularly as summer breezes sweep inland from the South China Sea. The main stadium is framed by a grand arch that faces the river. This channel’s sea breezes into the seating bowl and allows spectators panoramic views of the river, blending sport and natural setting in a single motion.
A Multifunctional Hub: Sport, Culture, Community
The Greater Bay Area Sports Center is a stadium trio of venues built for versatility. The complex includes:
- A 60,000-seat stadium for large-scale athletics and football.
- A 20,000-seat indoor arena suitable for basketball and other indoor events.
- A 4,000-seat aquatics center, complete with a 50-meter competition pool and diving well.
Beyond that, the site offers outdoor training fields, running tracks, and accommodation for athletes, enabling both elite-level competition and grassroots sports development. Local schools and sports clubs are invited to make use of this infrastructure, making the center a seedbed for future talent.
The stadium bowl itself is designed for adaptability. Seating arrangements can be modified to match different sports or events, and the venue can be transformed to host cultural performances, with a stage backdrop aligning toward the riverside, combining entertainment and setting in one space.
Integration of Landscape Design and Urban Vision
The 70-hectare riverside park is integral to urban planning and environmental resilience. Wetlands within the park will manage seasonal water surges and extreme sea-level fluctuations, helping protect the district from flooding while offering open, green space for recreation.
Set as the gateway to Guangzhou through the entrance from the north through the Shenzhen–Zhongshan Bridge, the sports center marks a symbolic and functional portal to the Greater Bay Area’s northern districts. Its architecture makes a public, visual statement, a modern landmark bridging sport, community, environment, and identity.
The Greater Bay Area Sports Center captures a rare balance of the past, responds to climate and context, serves both global and local needs, and shapes a new civic heart for a growing metropolis.
